Lecture Topics
Drawing from this wealth of experience and knowledge, Ken has produced several conservation minded and up to date fly fishing presentations on the following topics:
Fly Fishing in Mongolia covers the current status of hatches, the patterns used when encountering hatches, the current environmental issues related decline in numbers of major mayfly, caddisfly hatches and ironically, the rise of midge hatches. The presentation also serves as a tribute to work of the late Gary La Fontaine and in his book The Dry Fly.
The Evolving and Necessary Dry Fly this presentation covers the current status of hatches, the patterns used when encountering hatches, the current environmental issues related decline in numbers of major mayfly, caddisfly hatches and ironically, the rise of midge hatches. The presentation also serves as a tribute to work of the late Gary La Fontaine and in his book The Dry Fly.
Fly Fishing Colorado, and Beyond is the title of the first presentation I gave to TU’s Boulder Fly Casters more than 30 years ago and it surveys Colorado’s premiere rivers and lakes and the development of new fishing techniques, fly patterns, and the changes in our environmental and conservation issues that confront anglers today. Revisiting the Soft Hackle Fly is a look back the first mentioned of fly fishing and the first flies written about, more than 600 years ago, and where they are at today and many of the innovations (bead heads) brought to many of the original patterns and equally important: how to fish them

Ken’s Fly Fishing Background
Ken has been fishing in fresh and salt water since his adolescent years growing up in Southern California. Later, in the early 70’s and after taking a faculty position at the University of Colorado, he became aware and involved with trout fishing, aquatic insects, the study of riparian habitat, conservation efforts, Trout Unlimited.
Through his study of insects and interests in fly tying, his fly patterns were published in books by Dave Whitlock and in issues of Fly Fisherman magazine.
Later he would create more than twenty-five unique fly patterns and published many articles in Fly Fisherman magazine, Fly Tyer magazine and Tight Loops magazine in Japan and La Fourmi magazine in France.
He was a contributor to the book Stoneflies by Swisher and, and Richards, while publishing his own book Iwamasa Flies, with the Introduction by Dave Whitlock was published in 1987s. His creative fly patterns appear in Colorado Trout Flies by Todd Hoseman, “Fly Tyer's Almanac by Dave Whitlock, and his fly patterns appear in books written by authors such as John Geriach and John Randolph, Ted Leeson and in several Orvis publications.
Ken Iwamasa was co-curator of the Confluence: International trout fly exhibition, former executive director and writer for Fly Fisherman magazine Japan Edition and he is one of the original Orvis fly fishing school instructors and fishing guide as well. He has fished throughout the US, in fresh and saltwater, and in many waters in the Northern Hemisphere.
He has served as a consultant to several river and lake restoration projects in New York, Colorado and Utah. Along with Peter Mullett, he has worked to establish eco- tourism (fly fishing tourism) in Mongolia and has worked with Peter and Robert Behnke, noted trout and salmon expert, to promote taimen fishing trips to the Darhat Valley. Much of their work in Mongolia was highlighted in the feature article “The Taimen of the Darhat Valley – Mongolia” , written by Ken, published in the Sept 2007 issue of Fly Fisherman magazine.
These presentations are available free of charge to Trout Unlimited chapters, and bring together the latest angling techniques, fly patterns, and environmental concerns created by global warming and its effects on our rivers and insect populations – Yes, the flies in fly fishing are changing. He has given many of these presentations to TU chapters in Colorado and throughout the US. He is a life time member of Trout Unlimited
